Planet Textiles was first held by MCL News & Media back in 2009 in partnership with Messe Frankfurt at the Wanchai Exhibition Centre in Hong Kong.
The event has its origins in the seminal RITE Group conference held in London back in 2007, which was the very first international conference on textiles and sustainability; and was jointly organised by MCL, the University of Leeds and Marks & Spencer.
The first edition of Planet Textiles took place alongside the now-defunct Interstoff fabric sourcing event in Hong Kong back in 2008 and was held at the same venue for a further three years before it debuted in Shanghai,China.
Again, in partnership with Messe Frankfurt, Planet Textiles ran between 2012 – 2015 (with a hiatus in 2014) alongside the giant Intertextile Apparel Sourcing Show at the National Convention and Exhibition Center, in China.
Such was the demand for a similar event internationally, it was decided that Planet Textiles should move outside China for the first time in 2016, where it was held alongside the Copenhagen Fashion Summit in Denmark in partnership with the Danish Fashion Institute, the Sustainable Apparel Coalition and previous long-term partner Messe Frankfurt.
In 2017, Planet Textiles shifted its focus to India where it was hosted alongside the Sustainable Apparel Coalition’s annual member’s meeting in Bangalore.
In 2018, Planet Textiles was again aligned with the Sustainable Apparel Coalition’s annual member’s meeting – this time in Vancouver, Canada.
Like the original not-for- profit RITE Group event, Planet Textiles is closely allied to Ecotextile News magazine, the only B2B magazine dedicated solely to covering environmental and social issues in the textile supply chain. The magazine was founded by current editor and MCL director John Mowbray.
